Barrhaven

Barrhaven is a suburb of the city of Ottawa, located about 20 km (12 miles) southwest of the downtown core. Once sprawling farmland, Barrhaven has developed quickly into a bustling suburban area with an estimated population of approximately 57,000 people. Experts attribute much of this expansion to the once thriving high-tech industry in the area during the 1990s and the growth of the Public Service in the National Capital Region.

Given that a large proportion of Barrhaven was built in a very short period of time, it has a very uniform feel throughout the community. Many neighbourhood streets consist of a mix of large 2 storey suburban homes along side sections of well maintained executive town homes. As the area developed, a large commercial shopping district emerged consisting of a variety of big box stores and fast food restaurants. Unlike older sections of the city of Ottawa where the network of streets is commonly in a grid pattern, the streets throughout Barrhaven gently wind and turn their way through the various neighborhoods encouraging a quieter more sensible flow of traffic through the area.

For transit users, Fallowfield station at the corner of Fallowfield Road and Woodroffe Avenue represents the end of the line for the Nepean-South leg of the OC Transpo Transitway. This provides a convenient option for commuters traveling to and from downtown on a daily basis. Also the VIA Rail station is right beside the OC Transpo Station providing a convenient way to travel to Toronto and other destinations along the way.

Area attractions include shopping, movie theatres, a variety of restaurants, pubs and the Stonebridge Golf and Country Club.
